Service Ministries

At Skillman, we have many opportunities for you to get involved in the service of others. Here are some of the categories of service we offer:

Sunday Morning/Evening Involvement Opportunities

Counting Teams

Each Sunday, a group counts and records the Sunday Morning contribution and oversees its appropriate deposit. Normally, the counting team will leave near the end of worship service to take the contribution to a classroom where it is counted. Counting teams rotate monthly.

Greeters

Each Sunday morning, members are stationed at each of the entrances to the church to greet people, help guests to find classes, and assist people needing help into the building. The greeters are to remain at the doors. Others will be assigned to escort or assist people further than the entrance doors.

Prayer Leaders

At each service, prayer leaders are assigned. For the morning service, there are several prayers. For the evening services, there is usually an opening and a closing prayer.

Scripture Readers

Scripture readers are assigned to the Sunday Morning service when scripture readings or unison readings are part of the worship.

Communion Attendants – Sunday Morning

Communion attendants distribute the communion to the congregation. One person leads the prayers for the communion and the offering as well as any communion meditations.

Communion Preparation

Each Sunday, the communion bread and drink are prepared and put in the communion trays for use during the service. The people involved in this ministry will check and maintain bread and drink supplies.

Worship Team

The Worship Team sit at the front of the auditorium during the Sunday morning service and sing into microphones to help lead the singing portion of the worship service.

Guest Follow-Up

Volunteers in this ministry contact visitors to Skillman via phone or note to thank them for visiting Skillman.

Baptism Assistance

Workers in this ministry assist those being baptized at the church and ensure that all towels and baptismal robes are clean and ready for use. They also ensure that the spaces reserved for changing are clean.

Benevolence Service Opportunities

Meals on Wheels

These volunteers assist the Visiting Nurse Association (V.N.A.) by delivering hot meals to clients physically or financially unable to provide their own. Must drive his/her own car and have license and insurance. Any other training is provided by the Coordinator. Meals are picked up at First Community Church just west of Abrams and Mockingbird. Deliveries are made to various locations in East Dallas. Must commit 1 – 1 ½ hours once a month (Skillman provides delivery service for one week each month.)

TRANSPORTATION

The volunteers give members rides to and from chuch on Sunday mornings. Participants in this ministry serve on a rotating schedule..

Family Emergency Service

This ministry provides families with money on an emergency basis as needs arise.

Funeral Receptions and Food Preparation for the Bereaved

The volunteers in this ministry prepare a meal or a small reception at the church for the family when a member dies or when the spouse, parent, or child of a member dies. Sometimes the food is taken to the family home rather than having the meal at the church. The member’s Sunday Morning Bible Class is approached first in the request for food preparation volunteers; requests are made to the other classes if there are not enough volunteers from the member’s class.

Feed the Flock

The volunteers in this ministry prepare meals and deliver them to families who have a sick family member. The member's Sunday Morning Bible Class is approached first in the request for food preparation volunteers; requests are made to the other classes if there are not enough volunteers from the member's class.

Financial Service Opportunities

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee provides oversight for all the monies that come through the regular church budget. The members of this committee also provide legal and financial advice to members on personal investment and finance issues.

Moeller Fund Investment Committee

The Moeller Fund has been established to support both missions work and senior adult ministries. Each year, the proceeds from this fund are to be divided 50/50 between missions and senior adults. The Moeller Fund Investment Committee oversees the investment of the fund’s principal and oversees the general disbursement of these funds to missions and senior adult ministries. Once distributed, the Missions Committee and the Senior Adult Ministry decide on the specific disbursement of the funds.

Senior Service Involvement

Home Link

Members of various ages from throughout the congregation commit to one year terms of contacting once a week by letter, telephone, or visit a home-bound member of the congregation, taking special care around holidays and birthdays.

Visitation at Christian Care Center

Once a month, the senior adults go to Christian Care Center to visit Skillman members and others who live there. After the visit, the seniors go out to lunch.

Parkinson's Exercise Group

A group of senior adults with Parkinson’s disease meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to take physical therapy and speech therapy together.

Grief Class

This class is held on Wednesday evenings to help those who have experienced loss to progress through grief and to return to an active and productive life.

Estate Planning, Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Living Wills

Volunteers in this ministry assist senior adults with necessary legal paperwork and documents. The church maintains a safe deposit box in a near-by bank for the storage of personal documents for senior adults.

Senior adults interested in this assistance need to have the following information with them when they meet with the attorneys: latest will, power-of-attorney, living will, assets and liabilities, income and sources, family contact names and numbers.

Senior Adult Ministry Assistants

This ministry is comprised of members who wish to be actively involved in planning the direction for and the activities of the Senior Adult Ministry. The hope is that this will soon evolve into a Steering Committee for the Senior Adult Ministry.

Late-in-Life Paperwork Seminar

Once a year, the Senior Adult Ministry holds a seminar where seniors can come and receive assistance with estate plans, wills, powers of attorney, and living wills. The seminar is on a Saturday for 4-5 hours, and in this one session all the paperwork except for the will can be completed. Lunch is provided for the seminar participants.

Adult Education Service Opportunities

Friends Class

The Friends Class is made up primarily of couples and singles in their 20s and 30s, college age and just beyond. They study a number of topics regarding the Christian attitude and approach to career and home life.

Covenant Class

This class is made up primarily of singles and couples in their early 30s and early 40s. They meet on Sunday mornings in the Rotunda.

Blessings Class

This class is made up primarily of singles and couples in their 50s and 60s. They currently are meeting with Adult 3 in the North Wing.

Adult 3 Class

This class is made up primarily of singles and couples in their 60s and 70s. They meet in the North Wing on Sunday mornings

Adult 4 Class

This class is made up primarily of singles and couples 70 and up. They meet in the East Wing on Sunday mornings

Ladies Class

This class is made up primarily of ladies over 60 years of age. They meet on Sunday mornings in the Main Building across from the Library.

Sunday Night Services

Each Sunday evening, a small worship service or Bible class is held from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the FLC Rotunda.

Wednesday Night Services

Each Wednesday evening, a Bible class is held from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the FLC Rotunda.

Life Groups

Various small groups meet in homes throughout the area Sunday or Monday evenings (time varies).

Women's Service Involvement Opportunities

Ladies Bible Class

On Tuesday mornings, a Bible class for women is held. Classes are usually in series, and there are often studies and questions to prepare during the week for discussion at class. The Ladies’ Bible Class runs from September through May from 9:30 AM to about 11:00 AM.

Skillman Women at Night (SWANs)

This group of women meet the first Monday of each month for a Potluck Supper and fellowship.

High School Education and Development

Sunday Morning Class

Each Sunday morning the high school teens meet for Bible Class in the Teen Room from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Opportunities include class assistants and teen mentors.

Firesides and Devotionals

Each Sunday evening, the youth group meets in a home or the Teen Room for devotional, fellowship, and outreach. The meeting usually begins at 5:30 or 6:00 PM and lasts one or two hours. The host will provide a light meal (pizza, sandwiches).

Leadership Training for Christ (LTC)

LTC is a state-wide conference over Easter weekend. Many churches meet to compete in areas including Bible Bowl, Bible Reading, Bible Class Teaching,Video Bible Drama, Live Drama, Poetry, Song Leading, Art, Speech, Sign Language, Puppets, Chorus, Service Challenge, etc. The competition is held in a hotel in the Dallas area where the teens and adults will stay for the weekend.

Childhood Education and Development

Sunday Morning Teachers

Each Sunday morning, every age has a Bible class from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. The teaching is done in teams of couples who work together to put together lessons and teach the classes. The teaching teams rotate quarterly, monthly, or yearly. The classes are divided as follows: Cradle Roll; Twos; Threes; Fours; Fives; First Grade; Second Grade; Third Grade; Fourth Grade; Fifth and Sixth Grades.

Children's Church

Each week during Sunday morning worship, Children's Church, for ages 2-5, is held in the chapel simultaneously. The children attend the first few minutes of the adult worship service and are then dismissed to Children's Church where they have 20 minutes of praise and quiet time, 20 minutes of skits, songs, puppets, etc., and 20 minutes of "Centers." In Centers, the children have a craft, game, or some other hands-on, interactive learning activity. The two-year-olds do not go to Centers but return to their Sunday school classrooms until their parents pick them up after the worship assembly.

On Wednesday evenings, children's classes are held during the evening worship service. The age divisions of the classes can vary.

Leadership Training for Christ

LTC is a statewide conference over Easter weekend for 3rd thru 6th graders and junior high school students. Many churches from this region meet to compete in areas including Bible Bowl, Bible Reading, Bible Class Teaching, Video Bible Drama, Live Drama, Poetry, Song Leading, Art, Speech, Sign Language, Puppets, Chorus, Service Challenge, etc. The competition is held in a hotel in the Dallas area where the children and adults stay for the weekend. Some of the training is done during the Sunday morning and Wednesday evening Bible classes; additional preparation times are scheduled as well.

Around October 31, Skillman hosts a festival for children as an alternative to Halloween activities. The children come in costumes, and there are game and activity centers where the children can win prizes and candy. There is usually a theme based on a Bible story or stories around which the games and activities center.

Texoma Youth Camp

Each summer, there are summer camps at Lake Texoma for older elementary and junior high age children. The camps are divided into 9, 10, and 11 year-olds and 12, 13, and 14 year-olds. This ministry also includes upkeep of the camp, building new facilities, fund-raising, and overseeing rental of the property to other churches and non-profit groups.

Summer fun days

Once or twice during the summer months, thee will be a day of activity for the elementary school age children that will consist of a Bible lesson, a project or craft, and perhaps a field trip.

Other Opportunities to Serve

Prayer Chain

The prayer chain is set up to pass along prayer concerns throughout the congregation quickly and to pray for these concerns. Once notified of the prayer request, a prayer chain member will follow the list, calling other members, and praying as needed.

Blood Drives

Approximately two or three times a year, Skillman will host a blood drive in conjunction with Dallas Blood Bank.

Taping and Tape Duplication

Every week, tape recordings are made of the Sunday morning sermon and of the Sunday evening and Wednesday evening lessons. In addition, some of the Sunday Morning Bible classes are recorded. These tapes are then duplicated made available upon request for a small fee.
