Pre-K 4/5’s Overview

The Pre-K class is designed to help children prepare for their kindergarten experience.  It is a three day (Junior Varsity) class which meets Monday and Wednesday 9-2 and Friday 9-12 OR a five day (Varsity) program on Monday and Wednesday 9-2 and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9-12.  Each classroom devises their own timeline for units of study but the core curriculum is the same.

Pre-writing:  Students use the Handwriting Without Tears program along with real-life opportunities to write (thank you notes to visitors, Valentines day cards to elderly/shut-in church members, Veteran’s day cards…)

Pre-reading:  letter recognition, phonics and rhymes

Early math:  calendar, telling time, estimation, patterns, counting, adding and subtraction

Science:  experiments, both fiction and non-fiction literature to help us explore different units of study such as butterflies, winter animals, insects, bats, earth, space, oceans…

Fine Arts: hands on projects usually selected by theme or holiday, exposure to different types of music and acting out stories and plays

Social Studies: introduce students to different countries, states, continents using maps, globes, foods, stories and art projects

Children in the Pre-K program at Skillman CDC are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and participate in hands-on learning experiences!  We strive to assist your children in becoming strong and independent learners. We want them to develop:

  • An awareness of the world around them,
  • A positive self-image and positive relationships with others
  • Both fine and large muscle groups
  • Strong listening and speaking skills
  • Creative thinking skills
  • Increased vocabulary
  • The ability to self regulate their behavior
  • Problem solving skills for both academic and social situations

The students in this program attend Chapel, an extended Music class, Spanish and Computer class once a week. We are excited about the possibility of having your child participate in this exciting program.

PRIORITY REGISTRATION

Dear Parents:

Enclosed please find registration information for the 2010-2011 school year at Skillman Child Development Center along with a draft of the 2010-11, CDC calendar.* Registration is for the nine-month school year, September 2010 to May 2011. Our current CDC and Skillman Church of Christ families have priority with registration beginning at 9:00 AM Wednesday, January 20 through noon, Friday, January 29. Please drop off this important registration information in the CDC office. Avoid handing it to a staff member during carpool.

Three registration forms have been enclosed - Monday/Wednesday/Friday (white form), Tuesday/Thursday (green form), and Pre-K and 5-day 4’s class schedule (violet form). Both the 5-day and the 3-day Pre-K classes are intended for children with one year remaining before entering Kindergarten. Please note our Invitation to the Pre-K “Sneak Peek” on Monday, January 25. This is a brief overview of our Pre-K program and is open to all parents.

Carefully read and clearly indicate your selection of class offerings.  Complete and return the registration form, along with thenon-refundable registration fee for each child to be enrolled.  If

additional forms are needed, please pick them up in the CDC office.  Students electing a full time schedule, Monday/Wednesday 9 -2 and Friday 9-12, OR Tuesday and Thursday 9 -2, OR a 5-day class will be placed first and all others thereafter in order of receipt.

A check must accompany each registration form.  Please make each check payable to

Skillman Church of Christ in the amount of $260 per child.  Note your child’s first and last name and “CDC Registration” on the memo line and of course, please, write legibly. And also, please sign and return the Parent Acknowledgement of the New 2010 -2011 Operational Policy.

Priority registration ends at noon on Friday, January 29.  After that, we will open registration

to our wait list families. Parents, carefully consider your scheduling decisions and promptly return your paperwork and registration fee.  Not only are registration fees non-refundable, but

due to the increase in the number of students, once a class is filled, it will be closed, and we will not

be able to accommodate changes in days and/or times.

We have enjoyed having each of your children at Skillman and look forward to another great school year in 2010-2011.

Sincerely,

Ruth Ann Prude, Director

*All classes will be dismissed for children during the fall and spring parent/teacher conferences.

New Student Information

Dear Prospective CDC Parents:

Registration for new students for the 2010–2011 school year at Skillman Child Development Center will begin shortly. This is for the nine-month school year, September 2010 – May 2011, for children ages 15 months thru Pre-Kindergarten. Registration day for new students is Tuesday, February 2nd, beginning at 7:00 am until 1:00 pm.  Available spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

A preliminary 2010-2011 CDC calendar, Check List, and three registration forms have been enclosed - Monday/Wednesday/Friday (white form), Tuesday/Thursday (green form), and Pre-Kindergarten and Five–Day Four Year Old (violet form).  All Pre-Kindergarten classes are intended for children with one year remaining before entering Kindergarten.  Please note our invitation to the Pre-K “Sneak Peek” on Monday, January 25.  This is a brief overview of our Pre-K program and is open to all parents.

Carefully read and clearly indicate your selection of class offerings.  Complete and bring the Registration Form, Non-Refundable Registration Fee and Check List for each child to be enrolled on February 2nd.  If additional forms are needed, please call the CDC office.  Students electing a full time schedule:  Monday-Friday, OR Monday/Wednesday 9 -2 and Friday 9-12, OR Tuesday and Thursday 9 -2, will be placed first, then all others in order of receipt as class space allows.

A check must accompany each Registration Form.  Please make each check payable to

Skillman Church of Christ in the amount of $260.  Note your child’s name and “CDC registration” on the memo line.  Please see the enclosed New Student Application Check List for further instructions regarding contact information (one phone number only) and confirmation deadline.

On Tuesday, February 2nd, simply drop off the completed Registration Form, Check List and fee.  That day, we will be unable to answer any questions - it is difficult to answer questions until all registration forms have been received and reviewed.  We will contact you by Friday, February 5th regarding your child’s enrollment status.  If we cannot place your child, your registration fee will be returned and we will confirm if you wish your child to be on the 2010-2011 Wait List.

Skillman CDC is a ministry of Skillman Church of Christ.  Our office is located in the large main building, with the steeple, across the street from Tietze Park. The door that will be unlocked on February 2nd is in the back of the building, off Clements Street, at the end of the wheelchair ramp, near the toddler playground. We will post a bright-colored sign for you.

Thank you again for your interest in our program. We look forward to a wonderful 2010-2011 school year!  Hope to see you on the 2nd!

Sincerely,

Ruth Ann Prude

Director

Skillman CDC Wait List Untangled!

We would like to clarify how Wait List status works at Skillman CDC.

A new Wait List is begun every year on the first Tuesday in February - this day is designated as New Student Registration Day.

As noted in our enclosed letter, New Student Registration begins at 7am on February 2nd. Applications returned that day, are kept in order received and it is from this initial list that all available class openings are filled, thus the 2010- 2011 wait list is begun. Any other interested families are added to the Wait List in order thereafter. This Wait List is maintained throughout the current school year until it is re-established at New Student Registration Day 2011.

Although New Student Registration Day is first come, first served, initially, the determining factor for class placement is space availability. The first person in line will have first priority for openings.  If the requested spot is not available, alternatives may be offered. Please know, our first priority is to place all children whose applications are returned on February 2, even if availability occurs weeks later. Placing all New Student applicants is our goal.

We are grateful for your interest in the Skillman program and it is our hope that we can place all students in a timely manner. We look forward to an exciting school year and seeing you at registration on February 2nd.

Thank you again for your interest,

Ruth Ann Prude, Director

Skillman Child Development Center
